HOMEMADE CRACKERS...or....BYE BYE TRISCUIT!

ROSEMARY GARLIC CRACKERS

I am gonna have to be pretty darn desperate before I will EVER buy another box of Triscuits again!
THESE are so simple, and SO delicious, how could I ever go back?

And...have you looked at the list of ingredients on a box of Triscuits?
YIKES!

Oh, they make them sound all healthy and all...
"may help reduce the risk of heart disease"
But, a quick look at the list of ingredients and you'll think differently...
MSG(bad, bad, bad)
soybean oil(ick)
disodium inosinate and disodium guanylate (flavor enhancers)
I say, if you can't pronounce it you should not be eating it!
And you most certainly should not be giving it to your children!

I have been guilty of this....but no more.

READY TO BAKE

You'll find this EASY-PEASY recipe HERE, and I will tell you what I did a bit different from the original.
I rolled it out ON the piece of parchment paper, with a goodly amount of flour ON the parchment and of course on top of the dough.

I cut the dough in thirds, not half as the recipe says.
When rolled out thinly I had enough for 3 pans.

I cut the dough with a pizza cutter BEFORE laying it on the cookie sheet.
That's cause my pizza cutter did not get the very edges cut(on the 1st pan) and I had to go back and cut them with a sharp knife.

I also needed help getting them on the cookie sheet...you each take two corners and lift gently, placing it on the sheet.

And...watch carefully.
These will burn rather quickly.
Ask me how I know this.
No, don't.

In my defense, my oven has been on the ka-flooey for several months now, and fluctuates wildly.
I am praying that in 2010 I can get it repaired.
But...I would STILL watch carefully.

And cool completely as they really only get crispy when they are totally cooled.

For my herb topping I used my own dried rosemary which I ground in my coffee grinder.
Mixed that with some garlic powder, kosher salt and fresh ground pepper.

Trust me.
You will thank me for this.
Your children will thank me for this.
Your children's children, should the Lord tarry, will thank me for this.

xoxo,
Cindy

Cyn, I resolve to make these with gluten-free flour in 2010.

Do the crackers have a slight coffee flavor?

Looks so good, Cyn, must try.

Should the Lord tarry- that was funny.

We DO NOT EVER buy crackers in this house - never have. I would weigh in at a good 350 if we did. I do however love a good cracker but you are right, you just CANT eat those 10,000 ingredients.

I will surely be trying these - they look so good. Got any homemade cheese to go with them???

Mimi--no coffee flavor at all! Were you LOOKIN' for a coffee flavored cracker?

Girl, you ROCK! You beat me to it. I've had some cracker recipes laying here, and cheese recipes too. I'm so glad you did it first, so I could learn! I can't tell you how tickled I am.

Wow! I never thought of making my own crackers before but who knew that Triscuits contains MSG? That's crazy. I think I need to start reading labels. Your crackers look so much better than the boxed ones anyway!

Oh Cyn..these look so so good!!! I havn't made my own crackers in a long time..no good excuse now that I am home more. Maybe soon!!
I will sure be praying for you for your surgery and recovery...I know what you will be going through.
Have some simple plain soups ready for YOU for when you get home. My stomach was so messed up for the first month that I hardly ate a thing (lost 16 lbs!) also crackers and pretzels..things like that were the only things I could eat..and you have to eat something to take the pain meds..which you will need. Do all the exercises they tell you to do...even when you don't want to..it really helps.
I think I could slow dance now after 4 months..but don't think I will be doing the "twist"..haha.
You are in my prayers!!!!

Such a good idea, we don't generally buy crackers (the occasional organic kind for company) but I haven't made crackers in years. Again, thanks for the inspiration.

I have been making our crackers for a few months now and LOVE how they taste! No weird film on your tongue after eating them is great as well.
BTW-I just roll the dough directly onto my cookie sheet as thin as possible. Makes it even easier. They pop right off!
It is so nice to see others doing this. Most of my friends think I am a bit nuts!

Hi Cyn~ Thank you for the recipe. C eats those triskets all the time with the cheese I buy up in Berlin. I look forward to trying this, then I could do the "celebration dance" for one more thing not to buy that is loaded with not so great ingredients!

Yum! Did you see my grain-free crackers from New years? Okay, not MINE, but you know what I mean ;)

Hay, when is your surgery??

Michelle (She Looketh Well) said...

Oh, and I bet you could make these all wheat and add a little whey or kefir/yogurt in place of some of the water and let them 'soak' for 7 plus hours and then proceed. This type of recipe looks to easily convert to a soaking recipe! Soaking will help you digest and absorb all the goodies!

Just sayin' ;-)

Cindy ~ These do look terrific! I will have to give them a try.

Just was praying for you this morning...surgery is on Friday, right? May the Lord give you ALL you need day by day...

Blessings,
Camille

I look forward to making this recipe and hopefully hearing more uplifting music from the artist you have playing on your site...who is it?

Hey All, I just found this site today after talking with my daughter in law about making my own crackers. I am really interested in the triscuit recipe but I don't see it???? I see the pic and they look totally yummy but don't see the recipe....help

Anonymous said...

I don't know what kind of triscuits are sold around you, lol, ours are wheat, soybean oil, salt. that's it. your crackers look very tasty though!

Anonymous said...

Same here my triscuit only says 3 ingredients: wheat, oil and salt

Anonymous said...

When looking for homemade Triscuit recipes, I found your site. I was surprised to see your remarks about them being unhealthy and the list of ingredients you provided. I have been hearing more and more nutritionists saying positive things about Triscuits. The ingredients of the Thin Crisps include only: Whole Grain Soft White Winter Wheat, Soybean Oil and Salt. You don't get much simpler and pure than that when it comes to snack foods.

Anonymous said...

The ingredients I see on my Triscuit box say: Whole Grain Soft White Wheat, Soybean oil, Salt. That's it. Do you have a box of a different flavor?

Anonymous said...

Same here, I think I'd rather buy triscuits, thanks anyway

Better not eat any Tomatoes! They are loaded with MSG! Oh no! http://www.foodrepublic.com/2016/08/22/is-there-msg-in-tomatoes/

What is the sense of giving us this article about the crackers you make, telling us how good they are, and then saying that our children will thank you, if you don't provide us the ingredients to the recipe itself! I have checked this whole webpage several times already, top bottom and on the sides, looking for the ingredients to your so-called recipe! Thanks, but no thanks, I'll stick with my actual Triscuits. The low sodium ones are very tasty and I'm looking at the box right now; none of the ingredients you listed are even on it! There are a total of 3 ingredients listed: WHOLE GRAIN WHEAT, VEGETABLE OIL (WITH ROSEMARY EXTRACT), SEA SALT. That's it, nothing else!

If you can't pronounce it, don't eat it? What about looking up items and learning about them instead of living in and spreading your ignorance. Your body is full of chemicals that I doubt you can pronounce, yet they are essential for your life.
