WHAT was I thinkin'???

A teensie tynsie piece of the perennial gardens--pre weeding/cleaning

Did I think I would never get too old or sore to work in these gardens I created out of nothing more than 8 years ago?
Did I think I would ALWAYS be in my 40's?
Did I think I would ALWAYS have kids around to do some of the "grunt" work?
Did it never enter my mind that this might be overwhelming someday?

OBVIOUSLY NOT!!!

Another ittsy bitsy piece, half cleaned

One wheelie cart full of debri

One semi clean bed (see 1st photo for the "before")

See "Poncho" in the corner?
He is one of my favorite pieces of garden junque

Other half of the semi-clean bed

Took me more than 2 hours to get this little bit done!

Don't even GO there!
Those are the dried up old sweet peas from last summer
Just need to hoik them out as the new ones are already popping up nearby

And THIS is supposed to be the vegetable gardens?
HA!
Who the heck is gonna clean that bad boy out?

THAT WOULD BE ME:(

Looks like my work is cut out for me for, say, the next 3 months.

And, while I'm talkin'/fussin' about the stupid things I've done without considering that our bodies DO age...
How about this one?
Could have had the laundry area on the main floor in the 1/2 bath...
but NO...
Wouldn't a coat closet be a better idea?
NOT
So now it is up and down those basement stairs every time I need to do a load of laundry.

OK...enough complaining.
I am thankful that I have legs to stand on, a roof over my head, fresh clean drinking water, food in the cupboards, and get to spend eternity with my heavenly Father.

See y'all real soon.

xoxo,
Cindy

LOL. Sometimes we just have to look at the bright side of life to keep us going. :)

I've been saving all of my leaves and lawn clippings in a neat pile because after my garden plants come up, I spread it over the plots as mulch and it chokes out many of the weeds and saves a lot of work. I hope you keep counting your blessings because it's sometimes the only thing to do to keep from getting too discouraged.

OH, can I relate! I think about this constantly as we are planning a move. I want flat property so I don't have to hike a hill to get to my garden/chickens! We're canvasing friends right now to borrow a rotary tiller - I do NOT want to do the garden by hand this year. I think a rotary tiller has just made the top of my wish list!

Isn't it all worth it in the end, though!?

I will tell you what my good friend always tells me when I complain about laundry, that old ladies without stairs always break their hips...I know you have an injury but those stairs will keep you strong. Hope that gives you something good to think on when it annoys you. I can relate to your laundry and garden whoas with my injured knee..ugh.
love ya, Tonya

WOW! Cindy ~ You are so right...we don't often think of the work we are creating for ourselves down the road. I bet it was all so very pretty when you had those kids at home to do the hauling and weeding for you! I must take note...as I create new projects...I will enjoy the moment with the kids to help and think about the scaling back when the time comes. It does go by so quickly, doesn't it!

How pretty your yard is...love the picket fences...so "country"! :)

Have a beautiful day!
Love,
Camille

Don't you just "love" spring? I get so enthusiastic, then pull about five weeds, move to a different location, pull five more, then quit. I'm already looking ahead and thinking there's no way I'm taking this all on when my good workers are gone...I'm moving in with them!! HA!
Hang in there~

ps. I may be at Michelle's soon, maybe we could meet!

Food for thought for sure. You have really got me thinking Cindy! My husband did mention one day that he thought we would probably grow old on our 8 acre forest block. It is a lot of work now and we have lots of children to help look after it. Will my husband be still yielding a chainsaw and jumping on the tractor to haul out fallen logs when he is old and gray - oh that's right he is already gray! Maybe our walking sticks will come in useful for whacking the snakes!

I love your gardens, I think that they are going to be gorgeous! My laundry is down in the basement too, so I feel your pain. However, stairs will keep us young! (oh, I came over from Mona's blog)

Oh, Cindy! Last week when I was working outside I had some of the same exact thoughts. If only I'd left things as they were when we moved here ten years ago, now that I'm 60, it wouldn't seem so overwhelming at times! But NO...I just HAD to have that big round bed made in the middle of the yard. And when hubby pulled out the strawberries and asked if I wanted the space for a flower bed I just HAD to say yes..and could you make it a little bigger, please?

Oh my! The things we do to ourselves.

When you get your flower garden all done it will be beautiful. Loved seeing the little grape hyacinths.

Have my bulgur wheat soaking! Guess you know what is on our dinner menu for tonight! :)

I hear ya! Now you know why we sold our lovely country cottage with 6 acres and more flowerbeds in square footage than about 20 subdivsion type houses! We're too old and hurt too much to keep up with it all and we're not rich enough to hire landscaping contractors, LOL! It was truly lovely and enjoyable while we were younger, but it got to be a tremendous burden to us as time went on.

Let me tell you, Cindi young thing, we only age as we get older. Now! Ain't that just some news you didn't want to hear -chuckle, chuckle-
My beds look identical to yours and now I'm reminded of why I should have cleaned them out LAST autumn! So I could get straight to the planting this spring!
Perhaps this will be the year I live and learn, ya think?

You went and took the words right out m' mouth! I keep telling myself ....NOOOOO Jayme....don't make another garden bed, and then I think....OHHHHH it'll be so pretty. I've really been feeling my age. My motto now 'a little well tended, is better than a lot in a mess' Amen.

We all go through this when we reach our fifties and somewhere in that age range, little aches and pains begin to creep up on us. We only have 1 1/3 acres, but it is all on a hill and sloped ground. And now we want to add strawberries to our garden by next year. I figure in 10 years, we will probably have to downsize. If I prepare myself mentally for it now...I may be ready by then! ;)

Hey girl, if I don't come into the house (or crawl into it) I don't feel like I got anything done out in the garden.

Good work!

Shhhush on age! I'm what one would call a spring chicken and still am....ah.(sigh) well all I have to say is I'm glad a garden can't talk about how neglected it can be (that's probably the reason why plants die right when they get in my house. Seriously.). My husband and children have grown to love the way I think...I think..lol

so there you have it..a bit of gibberish from me.

God Bless
