Sunday afternoon stroll thru the BoxwoodsTho it has been cold here in West Michigan, we have had very little in the way of fresh snowfall for quite a while.
That is all about to change this week, but for now we have let the chickens out and about to forage where they may.
The snow does not seem to bother them if it is packed down enough so that they don't sink in.
And here and there are a few patches of green so they are content.
They manage to find their way back to the henhouse before dark, and Pete heads out to tuck them in for the night.

If you care at all about where your food comes from or how it is processed or how much big government has interfered, then you MUST rent this movie.
Some of what was in this documentary was no surprise to us as we try to keep abreast of the food industry, especially when the government is involved.
And it does not matter which political side you take, left or right, BOTH sides have dirty hands.
As much as we THOUGHT we knew, much of what this movie has to say was shocking to us.
Sickened us.
And made us re-think some things.
We had already made changes in the way we eat the past few years.
Fewer pre-packaged goods, less refined flours and sugar, pretty much no "fast food", organic when we can.
But there is more we can do.
As it is so aptly put in the movie...
"We vote with every bite we take..."
And we are changing the way we have been voting.

We're making the best effort possible to buy organic and to support good companies... Is there a list out there of companies that are "the real thing?"

Stay warm on your farm - I know that I'm staying in the kitchen right now - except when I have to go feed our new arrival and milk the cow lol!! Ah, I'm just waiting for winter to be over and for that blessed warm weather to come.

They play that movie occasionally at our local organic food Co-op. I haven't had a chance to see it yet, but will have to check it out!

Everyone should have to watch that movie! Here on the farm we are trying to raise and grow everything! We are not quiet all the way there yet so what we do have to buy we try to buy local and organic.
We are planning our vacation for a two day intensive at Polyface farm.
Can't wait to see their operation in real life.
We are getting some chickens this spring and giving it a go.
What do you do about predators when the chickens are pasturing?
We have foxes on our farmette, a big concern.

I've been hearing about that movie for a couple years - when I was teaching, one of my students told me about it. It was not mainstream then.

Those pictures are great and so sharp. Good job. Yes, I'm trying to buy locally more and cut out more of the processed foods. It's hard because it's so easy. I need to watch that movie.

CIndy, I still haven't seen that movie! You're reminding me how much I want to.
I agree that it is a movie that makes you think and then think harder about where we are in this food.
How is it possible that a company wtih huge, deep pockets is able to just run rough shod over famers who earn a living without their products? That segment was probably the most disturbing to me as I already was fairly aware of some of the issues around meat production.
So many great resources out there and yet we all have such little knowledge until we actively seek it out. How bad will it have to get before we are all really aware? Will there just be one company owning all the patents to plant and animal life and controlling all our food supply?
Thank God for those farmers who are bucking the system. And that more and more of us are making an effort to finally support them!
I'll be writing even more about our journey soon. I've been doing a lot of reading and watching and am blown away by how little transparency we have in our food system.

We're expecting our latest storm of ice, sleet, snow, high winds, low temps and, generally, messiness.
Time for more soup and bread.
We're a-trying! I made the yogurt and it was pretty easy. I am adding strawberries I had frozen after picking from our garden last summer.
I think the time has come where many of us in America are re-evaluating our food and our budgets and making changes for the better, hopefully!
