Spring 2009 Garden
Sweet Peas climbing
The good news is that there are plenty of veggies and fruits that are on the "safer" side of being pesticide laden. This does NOT mean that they are pesticide FREE....
cause they are NOT.
Unless, of course, you are buying organic or growing your own.
But...they are definitely safer than the "Dirty Dozen" from the last post.
So here goes...

So here goes...
1. asparagus (yay!!!)
2. avocado (yay again!!!)
3. banana
4. broccoli
5. cauliflower
6. corn(keep in mind that most of all corn grown is genetically modified)
7. kiwi
8. mangoes
9. onions
10. papaya
11. pineapple
12. sweet peas

It would be too lengthy of a post to get into what the side effects of genetically modified seed are. Do some research yourself...Google is full of articles, and...again....
PLEASE GO RENT "FOOD, INC."
It will change the way you shop.
It will change the way you look at food.
It will change you.
Now, for some updates from the farmette...
I am getting around much better!
My knee is still quite sore, and I will be in physical therapy for a few more weeks, but I am slowly improving.
Thanks to all who have asked, and I am so thankful for those of you who have prayed for me.
We had a bit of a quick blizzard blow in this morning, so armed with that forecast last evening, I soaked 2# of black beans last night and am cooking them off with some onion and garlic this afternoon.
An amazing Zuppa Bastarda (Bastard Soup), recommended by our local CSA owner is on the menu, and it couldn't be simpler.
Black beans, cooked with garlic and onion till soft with a bit of crumbled, dried sage.
Toast some stale, crusty bread (I happen to have 1/2 a loaf of homemade sourdough) and rub with raw garlic.
Place bread in the bottom of your soup bowl.
Add 1 TBL of basil pesto.
Pour the soup over the bread.
Drizzle with some fine extra virgin olive oil.
Eat.
xoxo,
Cindy

YAY YAY AND MORE YAY ...
pioneer woman tacos tonight
The soup sounds yummy! So glad you are better and bad,bad farmers! Stop trying to poison us! I wish it was mandatory for everyone to watch that movie....maybe things would change at a faster pace.
I am so glad to hear that your knee is improving!
I watched Food Inc last week, and I'm starved half to death since I won't eat anything anymore...LOL....joking. It's SO eye opening, especially everything about the seeds. Glad to hear you are up and about more.
xo
So glad you are feeling more like your usual self Cindy! We just were praying for you the other night. You are in our "prayer basket"...it was actually Emma that pulled your name out ~ she prayed sweetly! :)
Another practical post...how wonderful that there are some things we can feel OK about buying that aren't organic. I wonder, is organic corn genetically modified??
With Love,
Camille
Hi Cindy!
There's always some great info, great food, some chuckles and a sweet personal touch here at FarmGirl Cyn! I love your head photo with the lil' nest!
~Sending you fabulous knee wishes~

Hi Cindy, I am enjoying reading your blog, having just found it through a comment that you made about a recipe on "Simply Recipes". On there you mentioned that you made a roasted butternut squash risotto. I would love it if you would post me the link to where you have (hopefully) blogged this recipe! With thanks, Bern in sunny Caloundra, Australia.
PS I shall now continue to follow your blog!
Cindy, I must have tuned in late and missed what happened to your knee. But I'm very glad you are improving and wish you a smooth and steady recuperation!
This soup sounds like a good way to try out black beans. Pesto...yum...
So glad to see your last couple of posts. I can't wait for veggie season! Glad to hear you are feeling a little better and that soup sounds like just the thing now that the rain has returned.
I love all the foods on this top 10 list, and could live on them alone..well, some cheese would be nice!
I am so glad to read you're doing much, much better! I guess we have to check out that movie, thanks Cyn.
Loving your new blog look! It's snowing here today so the kids are home. I made some homemade granola bars and some organic whole wheat bread and I just got my raw milk delivery with my fresh farm eggs. I'm going to try the crockpot yogurt and experiment with making sour cream, cream cheese, mayo and ranch dressing. Wish we had some better resources for organic veggies but it looks like I'll keep driving to Austin for Costco, Whole Foods and farmers' markets! At least we can get eggs and milk. Oh well, I drive to Austin for church anyway! Glad your knee is improving! Love your blog!
Glad to hear you are on the mend. Spring is coming...you need to be back 100% when gardening season arrives. Can't wait!

Thanks for sharing these lists with us. I try to only by organic but sometimes it's so hard to find.
yah know, typically I am "fast like lightening" but your post title took me about 10 seconds to put together...maybe it;s the wine...
FOOD INC is awesome and really gross..it sure makes you reconsider those weeks where you can't afford free range meat...
YUCK!
Glad you are feeling better!!!
Oh YUM Cindy,
That soup sounds like a winner. It is the kind of day that yells for soup, so I'll have a go at it.
Aren't sweet peas the best?? Their scent always reminds me of my grandmother.
All simple joys to you,

I'm still waiting for my copy of Food Inc. to come in at the library! So, I didn't eat at McDonalds for over a year after Supersize Me...will I be able to eat AT ALL after watching this?!
Hey, totally different subject-Does your DH know about Sat. night? Any gift ideas?
Love ya!

cyn, glad you're getting better and better. this list is yummy just to read, much less eat!!!
That soup sounds delicious! Glad you are getting better.
Thanks for the list of F&V's - it's nice to see a couple of my favourites in this list as well!
Hope you have a great weekend
Renata :)
About a week ago I rented Food Inc to watch with my kids as part of our homeschool day. Wow! Eye opening to say the least!
Glad your knee is getting better - my physiotherapist certainly keeps me on the road, I don't know what I would do without physio!
