Gettin' Down and Dirty

Me, scootin' around the gardens

I have been trying to get outside on a daily basis, even if it is only for a couple of hours at a time.
A couple hours here, a couple hours there, and it won't be long before pret' near everything will have been weeded.
Then.... you start again.

Dirt cheap.

No. Really. It was cheap!
And I needed some topsoil.
Topsoil from a farm where cattle roamed for 40 years.
Good stuff!

One little bit of weeded garden.

The rusty pitcher has some kind of perennial that comes creeping out of the holes.
I never have to water it, so it's got to be a succulent.
When I peeked down inside I could see bits of green coming up.
Won't be long before it's trailing down the sides.

Dust baths

The chickens have been making themselves at home with all the weeds taken out of the gardens!
These Cuckoo Maran were bought from Ang last year and they have been the sweetest hens we have ever had.
Not a bit skittish and pay you no never mind when you stroke their backs.
I like to do that...just cause I can.
The others will peck at me, so...hands off.

Flowering Crabapple tree

So beautiful right now, with little bees buzzing all around!

I hope you all are having a wonderful spring week!
I'll be back soon with more farmette updates.

Till then...
xoxo

Good dirt is worth it's weight in...I don't know what...maybe gold or maybe tomatoes! I'd love to find some good, "been-used-for-40yrs-by farm-animals-as-a-toilet" dirt! Lucky, lucky you!!!

I should get my binoculars out and watch you scoot around your yard! LOL

Love seeing the chickens out, but what to do when the garden is all planted!!!??? My ladies have dug up my strawberries!!!

Free Range and a garden, this is the question that begs to be answered!

Michelle....Cheap (cheep) fencing. We are looking into getting some cheap chicken wire to enclose the gardens. Just the 2 veggie gardens as they pretty much don't mess with the perennials. And those chickens LOVE fresh, on the vine, tomatoes! KEEP AWAY!

Hi Cyn,
Just enjoying your garden pics. I am glad you are able to get out in the garden. I especially enjoyed the pic. of the hens taking their dust baths. Continue to enjoy the spring.
Hugs,
Sue

Lovely post - you've inspired me to head outside.
I do have one question - what do you do with your chooks when your garden is growing? - my chooks ended up destroying a large amount of my seedlings this last summer.
