Not particularly round, not particularly pretty, but...
DANG!
They are tasty!
And....CHEAP!
These cost me mere pennies.
Thomas'?
At least a couple hundred pennies.
I figure, if it's on the grocers shelves, I can likely make it better at home.
And now this is true of my 100% whole wheat english muffins!
I found the recipe HERE, so I won't bother with repeating it.
But...
let me assure you...
THESE ARE GOOD, and EASY-PEASY!
And MY list of ingredients is short!
Sourdough starter
milk
whole wheat flour
honey
salt
baking soda
cornmeal for dusting
Thomas' list of ingredients for their 100% whole wheat english muffins:
Ingredients:
Whole Wheat Flour, Water, Yeast, Wheat Gluten, Honey, Farina, Cornmeal, Salt, Cracked Wheat, Preservatives (Calcium Propionate, Sorbic Acid), Grain Vinegar, Calcium Sulfate, Soybean Oil, Wheat Starch, Mono- and Diglycerides, Datem, Natural Flavor, Sodium Stearoyl Lactylate, Ethoxylated Mono- and Diglycerides, Wheat Sour, Dextrose, Calcium Carbonate, Guar Gum, Lactic Acid, Molasses, Fumaric Acid, Whey, Soy Flour (Trivial Amount of Soy Flour), Caramel Color, Acetic Acid, Sucralose, Citric Acid, Sodium Citrate, Natamycin (a Natural Mold Inhibitor), Potassium Sorbate (Preservative), Nonfat Milk.
Several of these ingredients are genetically modified.
I know.
I looked it up on Google.
I love Google.
Google has an answer for just about anything.
Hmmmm.....tough decision?

well what do you know, I've been wanting to try to make English muffins!
by the way, could you send me your beef info? I was trying to remember who it was that had a source - your comment on my post today reminded me it was you :-)
yum!
ooooohhh ...maybe with some of my homemade pizza sauce and moot-zsa-rella
love english muffin pizzas
Nicely done. Looking at the ingredients is scary isn't it.
I love over easy eggs on an English muffin - your breakfast looks amazing.
thank you so much for recommending roots, shoots, buckets and boots! I love love LOVE this book! I got it from the library and we are already growing seedlings for a sunflower forest. And we're going to make a teepee vine and more!
Love to you!
yummy! thx for sharing
How cool is that! You made me smile today Cindy...great post! :) I bet your chickens are glad you found some chicken meat to buy and you are just eating their eggs! LOL!
Have a wonderful day!
Blessings,
Camille
every thing is better if its not been over processed and trashed.
The fewer ingredients in a product the easier it is on your body to.
Something real special about home made muffins, I so love them, and yep those eggs really set um off, hugs my friend, Barbara
I can't deal with runny eggs. The english muffins I will try. I like eggs, Its just I do not like them uncooked.... It grosses me out....Im weird like that...I have a hang up about wild meat too....and we live in the mountains and my husband and sons are hunters....I wish I was not like this...I will even cook the wild meat how much more organic could we get? I just eat something else....bondedge...I know....
Awesome Cindy. Just awesome.
I am with you. If I can find it on the shelves well, really, I don't buy much off the shelves aside from oatmeal, couscous and rice for risotto these days but really, I think, "Good grief, I should just try making that." I google the crap out of everything from Panera to Starbucks recipes... it is really scary that you can make something from yeast, water and flour and the stuff at the store has 400 ingredients.
NO THANK YOU!
I always enjoy visiting you, Cyn.
Sue
Thank You once again for a very interesting Post the muffins look good!
~~HUGS~~
Me, too, trying to live without all the additives. Make it yourself and make it healthy and pure!
I love a breakfast like that. Over-easy eggs are my favorite on toast or a muffin or an open biscuit! Now I'm hungry and it's hours til breakfast!
I have made sourdough English muffins three times now but not whole wheat. That is my next experiment, thanks. I cooked mine in a electric skillet with the lid on and it forms a oven like atmosphere, works great. The muffins get done without becoming too brown.
Okay! I am doing these! Do you think I could start them in the morning to have them for dinner? Does it have to sit overnight?
As always your post looks wonderful! I love English muffins...may need to try this recipe! Thanks for sharing.
Michelle...I think how long it sits is up to you. Likely 7-8 hours is fine. You want it to bubble up like a sourdough sponge. Mind you, these are VERY wet when shaping. Mine set overnight...maybe 10 hours? And next time I might try it the way Holly recommended, only I will just cover my cast iron skillet.
How yummy!
Hi Cyn! You've been on my mind all day yesterday. Just wanted to say hi and let you know I'm praying for you, what ever your situation may be. {Hugs} to you.
I enjoy popping over and seeing what your cookin'. These look so good. How do you find the time to cook these things AND the house AND healthy meals. It just bafles me. :-)
What a terrific find!!!
Can't wait to try them. What about some sort of ring, to make them round? I used to have rings for frying round eggs. Of course the egg leaked underneath, but bread dough would behave better.
Or can you cut them with a cutter, or lid? I better follow the link and save the page. I'm out of printer ink.
~Faith
I made them and they turned out awesome! Actually, have made them twice. Using lots of cornmeal helped with them not sticking and keeping them round.
I did some of them on the griddle and some of them in a cast iron fry pan with lid. It was nice with the lid, sort of like an oven.
Thank you for sharing this. Now, off to succed with fluffy sourdough bread. Pray for me! ;-)
YUM! They look absolutely delicious!
Did you start your sourdough starter yourself? If so how did you do it? I'm dying to start one, but haven't been brave enough yet!
Hope you have a lovely weekend - enjoy those delicious looking eggs!
Renata:)
I am your new follower come by and visit me at http://showmemama.blogspot.com
sooooooooooo good! how are you sweet thang? looks like you are enjoying this season fully! I miss those fresh eggs more than anything else from my short lived life in the woods! delicious! xo
The english muffins, the eggs....looks wonderful! Yesterday, we made bagels. Whole wheat bagels and gluten free bagels...I was surprised at how easy they were to make and how good they taste. Maybe we'll try english muffins, next. (my husband won't let us have chickens, though)..but my friend at church does, and we've been getting eggs from her. Well done!
Oh Cyn! I had pastured eggs this morning for breakfast with some uncured bacon and my own sourdough bread, but muffins? oh how delicious! Am going to try your recipe!
Finally, since I cant find your email I had to post this here..
I just wanted to personally invite you to the launch, this coming Tuesday, of the Two for Tuesdays Recipe Carnival this coming Tuesday at A Moderate Life.
