FRENCH FARMGIRL & BEEF BOURGUIGNON

Small white onions, browning

I can't say that my love for cooking came from Julia Child, but I know her influence certainly didn't hurt!
And...after seeing "Julie & Julia" twice since it opened,
(LOVED IT, LOVED IT, LOVED IT!!!)
I knew I had to try my hand at her infamous "Beef Bourguignon".
And today was THE day.
Cooler than average temps, which meant I wouldn't regret having the oven on for hours!
And I had all the ingredients handy.
(And yes, I am French, on my fathers side!)
Maybe it helps?

I am not going to bother posting the recipe, but instead will give you the link that I followed....

After simmering in the oven for 4 hours

I also made garlic mashed red potatoes and cheddar/buttermilk biscuits to round out the beef.
And some fresh from the garden tomatoes!

I think it was delicious!
Definitely company worthy.
And most definitely something I will try again.

And, lest you think this has to be a pricey dish, let me assure you,... it's not.
The dish calls for 3 cups of a young red wine.
I think Vella's Merlot fits the bill perfectly!

While dining this evening, I put on an old record.
Fittingly titled, don't you think?

Look what's on the back of the album!!!!
FRENCH RECIPES!
And there it is, Boeuf Bourguignon!
It was meant to be.

Cyn, I love boeuf bourgignon, and make it about twice a year, along with Chateaubriand, which I also make with pearl onions. These dishes have become company favorites or holiday meals at our house. We aren't always traditional! And no, it is not expensive to make.

I can smell the wonderful aroma of this dish all the way from NY!
Too bad there isn't a lasso long enough!
I'll have to round up the ingredients and go for it! Looks too good to leave it as a picture on the page...
Fabulous post Cyn!

ps. Was thinking of going to that movie...you are the third person to recommend it here in blogland...

Hello,

I am Kim, Kay Butler's friend. I know you read her blog frequently and may be a member of Mary Jane's Farm. I just emailed them, but it seems like such a large organization and I don't know if my letter will reach the right person.

Kay is being admitted to the hospital for emergency gall bladder surgery. Hopefully it will take place later today. I am trying to get the word out, so people can be praying. I will post updates on my blog. Any help would be much appreciated.

Thanks :)

Ahh- I should have never moved out of your house! I never get to cook anything fun unless Mickey Mouse shaped chicken nuggets count. I cooked ham and eggs for supper tonight and Cady said she didn't like that kind of chicken. Where did these picky people come from!!!!

Hello - I did not get an invite.

I am sitting here craving a pregnancy pizza and then I read this blog. Now I am really in trouble.

Dear friend,

I have been reading your blog recently because I so so miss Homemaker Ang's blog and just needed someone to read and become a part of in cyberspace. I have visited with Ang this summer and saw that you also did. Can you tell me where you are from in Michigan?

Alice,
I am in Allendale, MI, about 1 hour south of Ang. Used to be only 20 min drive to her old place...now it is more like a day trip!!!

This looks fabulous and I love Beef Bourguignon. You're right, it's a great recipe to make for family, friends or holiday meals.
I enjoy Julie and Julia but the political statement cast a pall over it for me. I go to the movies to be entertained not hit over the head with politics.

I love beef bourguignon. My mom used to make it only every so often, but what a treat. Your new recipes and photos make me miss home. But that's a good thing :)
